Where to find kitchen design ideas? In the paint section, of course!

Well, what else would you expect from someone who named their blog Painted Lark?

Gorgeous teal and pale pink kitchen with open shelving.

My Inspiration Photo from Valspar

When we bought our Florida house we had never renovated a home. The house had a new roof, new carpet, and a new stove and microwave. I’m not sure why the bank thought those were the most important things to do to sell the house (I, of course, would have painted!), but I was delighted to have anything off my really long list! I was also inspired to have a fairly blank slate to work on. Here’s what the kitchen looked like:

Yep, no fridge, million year old dishwasher and NOOOO style!

As soon as I knew we were going to buy the house I hit the Lowe’s near my mother’s house to start thinking about paint colors, I just happened to grab the Valspar brochure above as I loved the colors! Little did I know it would be so much more useful than just the color inspiration.

Kitchen Window After-the new pool didn’t hurt the view…!

But then I realized that the layout on this brochure was basically the layout of our kitchen! Why not, right? it’s a rental in Florida-so color, color, color and a bit fun seemed like a necessity! And this kitchen is very small and a pass through, so anything I could do to brighten it and open it up would be the right choice.

I’ll include more details on the renovation in my next post. Could you live with this much color? I thought I should do it at this house as I might not want to live like this all the time. Now that I’ve seen it, I love it! Wondering what color to paint my kitchen cabinets in Maryland?

Love the kitchen redo! Question, i noticed the cabinet door fronts looked different after….did you buy new doors? Or what did you do to nake them look different? I have ugly laminate kitchen cabinets as well. …need an update. I thought maybe you could have some tips. Thanks so much!

      Hi Melissa,
Thanks for visiting Painted Lark. We bought new cabinetry. I felt that it was worth the investment on this and I wouldn’t get the look otherwise. I did price bead-board and cottage style cabinets at the big box hardware stores and mine were much cheaper and custom painted through a contractor. And you can see how tiny this kitchen is… In fact one of the upper cabinets had a bad spray job and they fixed it immediately so it was nice to have personal service, too. I have seen some things on the web where people are using bead-board wallpaper (on walls) to get the look cheaper and be able to do it DIY, maybe that would work if your not doing new cabinets. ~Ali

      Hi Kimmy,
I’m at the house now and don’t have my book from the renovation! I’m pretty sure it’s Hazel by Sherwin Williams (SW6471). The color is gorgeous-reads more of a blue than a green but has a lot of green in it. I also used it on the exterior of the house and it reads much more green than I would like it to in the Florida sunshine! Oh well, live and learn… couldn’t afford to repaint, so we kept it! With a pale yellow front door, of course. I love color!
