October 9th is PANDAS Awareness Day! That’s this Friday, so in the spirit of awareness I had planned to do a Facebook post each day with a fact about PANDAS/PANS, but then I started typing all this info into FB and that’s just really annoying, so here it is!
Sorry for the repeat if you saw this one on Facebook yesterday.
What does P.A.N.D.A.S. stand for?
Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Streptococci-PANDAS happens when the body’s immune system attacks the brain after a strep infection. In fact its the antibodies to strep doing the attacking.
What is P.A.N.S?
Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome-after PANDAS was found and named, when children who did not have raised levels of strep antibodies or recent strep infections were showing the same symptoms. It is believed the same misdirected immune response as PANDAS is caused by other infectious triggers (lyme, mycoplasma, etc).
In the beginning we believed our son had PANDAS. Blood tests revealed elevated numbers of antibodies to strep. As he started to improve then worsened, we think he may have picked up mycoplasma as the blood tests showed him at the high side of a normal reading for those antibodies later.
